Do's and Don't;s

Raynaud’s Phenomenon
1. Most of the patients suffer from Raynaud’s phenomenon. So protection from cold is very important.
2. Digital Ulcerations are common. And digital ulcers take longer than normal to heal.
3. Adequate local care of ulcers is required.Antibiotics can help when infection is present.
GI symptoms
Patient some times have difficulty in digestion of food. It is suggested to have:
1. Small frequent meals
2. Early and light dinner
3. If gastro esophageal reflux still persists then elevation of head end of the bed is helpful.
Skin Symptoms
1. Creams, Vaseline oils like coconut oil can be used to lubricate the skin
2. If the skin is itchy then anti allergic can be taken with medical advice.
Breathlessness
1. Patients can feel breathless on exertion. It is important to consult a doctor for this complaint. Also sudden increase in breathlessness should be investigated.
2. Some patients who have advanced ILD may need domiciliary oxygen therapy.
Renal Involvement
1. Blood pressure should be kept under control.
2. Corticosteroids should not be given unnecessarily
3. Renal function tests should be routinely performed
Musculoskeletal Involvement
Patients commonly suffer from fatigue, aches and pain. Also many suffer from joint pains as well. Some have difficulty in opening and using the hand. This can be due to Scleroderma. Immunosuppresants should be started and may be useful.
